  • Gold to replace US Treasuries as the ‘ultimate risk-off asset’ – strategist

A report by financial services organization INTL FCStone has measured gold’s ability to act as a hedge against stock market volatility, which “varies from decade to decade.”

According to the report, if the US Federal Reserve continues to steadily raise interest rates, gold will replace US Treasuries as a safe-haven asset.

“If, as I expect, rates will go higher for longer, much higher for much longer, gold will replace Treasuries as the ultimate risk-off asset, and investors should own it as an insurance against equity market risk,” said INTL FCStone global macro strategist Vincent Deluard.

He noted that the precious metal tended to rally during “big down weeks for the stock market between 1985 and 1995, when the memories of the great inflation were still fresh.”

Gold’s value as an equity hedge declined during the “great moderation” of the late 90s, Deluard said, adding that Treasuries emerged as the new risk-off asset during the deflationary years that followed the financial crisis of 2008. “However, gold has outperformed Treasuries on bad stock market weeks since the Fed started hiking rates in 2015,” he said.

The report also highlighted that the Fed’s “put” has been waning when it comes to US Treasuries. A “put” option is an option to sell assets at an agreed price on or before a particular date.

INTL FCStone’s strategists added that foreign investors do not favor US Treasuries because American yields are “often negative on a currency-hedged basis.”

According to Deluard, “the speculation around Russian and Chinese central banks buying up gold and selling US Treasuries” is another significant aspect to keep in mind when weighing risk-off asset options.

It is “undeniable that China and Russia have reduced their US Treasuries reserves (to close to zero in the case of Russia) and increased their holdings of gold,” he said.

  • BMW Art Guide film series: KaviarFactory – Henningsvær, Norway

Contemporary art projects on a picturesque island off the northern Norwegian coast
In our film series format, we see writer and curator Francesca Gavin team up with creative heads and art advocates from various fields. Together, they embark on a journey to a selection of some of the exquisite collections featured in the BMW Art Guide by Independent Collectors.

Here presenting the sixth installment, this journey takes us through the breathtaking landscape of Norway’s Lofoten Islands, where the KaviarFactory literally exists on the edge of the world in Henningshvær. Crusing alongside the dramatic headlands, Gavin is accompanied this time by DJ Cassy who contributes a good sense of humour to their off-grid exploration.

Collectors Venke and Rolf A. Hoff are the pair behind the collection, who facilitated the conversion of a former caviar factory into a 500-square-meter exhibition space. Opened in summer 2013, the building was renovated by the Norwegian architecture firm Element, complete with a few artist touches like the façade’s lettering “KAVI FAC ORY” by Michael Sailstorfer and door handles by Bjarne Melgaard. Underlying the collection’s unique seaside residence, is both a sense of play and intruging competition between artworks, space and nature. To further add to the experience, is Venke and Rolf’s lighthouse, which is a short walk away and can be rented for special occasions.

As for the collection, for over 30 years, the pair make a push to support Norwegian and international positions, doing so by inviting artists from all over the world to realise an exhibition. Through collecting, Venke loves the opportunity to connect with people, wishing to give both local residents and visitors the possibility of viewing high quality contemporary art. The current exhibition, titled “Creation of a Moment”, explores photography as a medium and what this could be within the realm of contemporary art.

Join Francesca Gavin and DJ Cassy on their discovery as they explore the Henningshvær fishing village and the KaviarFactory, featured in the current fifth edition of the BMW Art Guide by Independent Collectors.

  • Russia to dominate world’s platinum & palladium production with new Arctic project

The Arctic Palladium project which involves development of several platinum-group metal deposits on Russia’s Taimyr Peninsula is nearing completion. It is expected to turn Russia into the world’s top producer of platinum metals.

The platinum-group metals (PGMs) is a group of six metals: ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum. They have similar physical and chemical properties, and tend to occur together in the same mineral deposits.

The deposits bear almost five thousand tons of platinum group metals with a production potential of 120 tons per year, according to Musa Bazhaev, head of Russian Platinum. Production will be launched in 2024.

An increase in freight traffic along the Northern Sea Route will make Russia the world’s leader in the production of platinum-group metals, particularly palladium, he said during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“We are setting up the project on the basis of new environmental requirements,” he said, explaining: “we will not have liquid waste, but will have dry storage… not to litter the environment.”

He pointed out that the project will enable Russia to produce more than 50% of the world’s platinum group metals. The Russian president has praised the project, noting its importance and good return.

The total investment in the project was $15 billion, and net profit currently stands at $3.7 million, which is an “excellent” result, according to Putin.

One of the world’s largest projects for the development of the platinum group of metals, Arctic Palladium was agreed in 2018 between Russian Platinum and Norilsk Nickel. The project aims to develop mining projects in Siberia, which contains some of the world’s richest deposits of platinum and palladium.

Russia’s mining industry, the country’s second largest after oil and gas, accounts for a significant share of GDP and exports.

  • Savvy dad, 22, saves £250 a month on £18k salary – but it’s going to take 34 years to buy a house

DAD-OF-ONE Daniel Marshall earns £18,000 a year and manages to save an impressive £250 a month – but it’s still going to take 34 years to buy a house.

The 22-year-old from Burnley, Lancashire lives with his partner Rabekah Whiteside, 20, and their son James, five.

This week, Daniel takes on the Cash Clinic challenge and lets expert Holly Thomas rifle through his bank statements to give him a money makeover.

Holly admits that Daniel runs a tight ship – but as well as saving cash she gives him some practical advice on how to get on the property ladder.

When you get a mortgage it’s usually possible to borrow four times your income – that means £72,000 for Daniel.

His partner Rabekah is a full-time mum and student, so she doesn’t have any savings or cash coming in.

They have £4,650 in savings but to buy their dream terrace three-bed home in their local area costing £175,000 on average they would need around £100,000 at least to put down as a deposit.

In order to save this up at their current rate it would take a massive 34 years, unless they are going to use a scheme like Shared Ownership or a Help to Buy loan to buy sooner.

“It’s really important to me to provide stability for my family and invest in our future,” Daniel told The Sun.

“But there’s no escaping that things are really tight and I’m worried it’s wishing for the impossible.”

“I’m proud of what I’ve managed so far but I’m concerned how long it’s going to take me to save up a decent amount.”

Here we reveal how to save Daniel hundreds of pounds – and how he can increase his family’s income.

    Groceries: £180 per month

    New spend: £150 per month

    Saving: £30 per month

Daniel is super frugal – but there are ways to cut back.

A simple way to save is buying non-perishable items like loo roll, shampoo and cleaning products in bulk.

You’ll need to hunt out the deals using a website like MySupermarket.

While buying from wholesale retailers like Costo (which costs £15 a year for online-only or £33.60 for in-store membership) or Makro, which is free, could save Daniel upto £30 a month.

Daniel could also keep an eye out for one-time offers on Topcashback, where he has an account.

It is currently offering £12.60 cashback at Sainsbury’s – so if he does one weekly food shop he’ll get £12.60 back (with a minimum spend of £40, plus delivery fees), and that may be cheaper than his regular supermarket, Aldi, for a one-off shop.

    Fuel: £80 per month

    New spend: £40 per month

    Saving: £40 per month

Joining a car-sharing scheme could halve Daniel’s fuel costs if he can split the fuel bill.

It’s simple if you can find workmates who live close to you – or if you share the school run with other parents nearby.

There are online services that will help match your journey with others such as liftshare.com, which is free to join.

    Entertainment: £8.99 per month

    New spend: £8.99 per month

    Saving: £4 per month

Streaming TV is essential in most households – especially with little ones to keep entertained – and Daniel uses Netflix for this.

Netflix’s standard plan, which lets you watch two screens at a time, is pretty affordable though it has recently risen from £7.99 a month to £8.99 a month.

But Apple TV+ is launching on November 1 for just half the price at £4.99 a month. The new service is accessed via the Apple TV app and will allow you to download shows to watch offline.

If he wanted to go one step further he could also ditch his TV Licence and save £154.50 a year.
It might seem drastic, but over 37,000 households ditched theirs last year.

Daniel is also paying fees for his college course – a certificate in plumbing and electrics. This costs him £212 a month with another three years to go until it’s all paid up.

The family car – a Ford Focus – which Daniel uses to drive to work and take James to school, is leased which costs £186.59 a month, including interest payments that can’t be changed.

Daniel has a broadband and TV package with Virgin. Earlier this year he was told the bill would be £74 a month but he haggled the amount down to £50 a month.

Energy bills with Octopus cost £45 a month and he last switched in March so he will likely be on the most competitive deal.

Daniel’s parents pay his monthly mobile phone bill.

Council tax costs £81 a month which includes a 25 per cent discount because Rabekah is a student. So, there are no further savings to be had here.
